Auto Repair : How to Check a Fuel Pump Relay

A fuel pump relay’s job is to take some of the voltage load off of the wiring harness to allow a better current flow from the battery to the fuel pump. True that the fuel pump takes a good amount of current, but not so much so that it necessarily warrants the need for a relay. The more modern purpose for a relay in line with the fuel system is to disengage power in case of an accident. The cars main computer is the link between that relay and the fuel pump.
If ever you inadvertently short + or – where it shouldn’t in this relay/computer connection and you can’t afford a new computer simply bypass to another key switched + temporarily.
